5 Component Characteristics in Warehouse Layout Planning

In a factory, the existence of a warehouse is important. The warehouse becomes a place that is burdened with the task of storing goods to be used in production in a factory, until the goods are requested according to the production schedule.

Warehouse generally acts as a buffer or counterweight at the same time to determine the next steps of a company regarding whether the company will use the warehouse for commercial or preferably only used alone.

The layout of the warehouse in a factory is important. We can not make the layout of the warehouse carelessly if you want the function or role of the warehouse can be maximized. To maximize the function of this warehouse, a good warehouse layout plan is needed.

The purpose of planning the layout of the storage or warehouse, among them are (1) for the effectiveness of the use of space, (2) to provide efficient material handling , (3) to minimize storage costs when meeting services at certain levels, (4) to provide maximum flexibility, and (5) to provide good household production arrangements.

To be able to complete and fulfill this goal, it is necessary to apply several principles or factors or criteria as a basis for the application of the storage area. The principles that must be integrated with each other must meet the commodity factor and the Space Utilization factor .

In the commodity factor, there are characteristic points that need to be considered in this warehouse layout planning. The characteristics of components stored in these warehouses need to be considered carefully because they often conflict with methods based on popularity, similarity and size.

Some characteristics of the components that are important in warehouse layout planning, namely:

Contents lll

1.  Perishable materials (perishable components)

Perishable components need more special handling because of their nature. This component generally requires the handling of serious environmental controls and the determination of shelf life which must also be considered.

2.  Oddly shaped and crushable items (special shape components and easily damaged)

In warehouses, sometimes there are special form components and are easily damaged. Components like this generally will not fit into the available storage area. Therefore, for components with this particular form, it will require handling that tends to be problematic.

If the component must be stored, a special room which is open and suitable for storage will be needed. Especially if the components are also easily damaged or can be damaged due to moisture incompatibility.

If so, then the storage method and storage units used in the structuring of the warehouse must be adjusted accordingly.

3.  Hazarduous materials (Hazardous components)

Some components may be classified as hazardous or dangerous. For example, just like varnish , propane , paint and other chemicals that are generally flammable. These components in the warehouse will require a separate storage area.

In addition, there must be a safety code that is always checked and immediately followed by all components which are flammable or explosive. There are also acids and other dangerous components, also must be separated to reduce the possibility of accidents to workers.

4.  Security items (Components with special safeguards)

It can be said that almost all components can be lost. However, there are also components that require special security. Components that require special security are the types that are often the targets that are easily lost.

It is recommended that the component with these characteristics be given additional protection in the storage area so that it is more awake and the potential for loss is reduced.

5.  Compatibility (Compatibility / suitability)

In the warehouse, maybe we will store components with characteristics that require adjustment with other components. For example, for some chemicals it can be harmless when stored alone. However, these components are volatile when mixed with other elements.

In addition, some materials may not require special storage. However, these components can easily be contaminated with other materials if placed together.

If so, it is necessary to consider this mixed storage so as not to encounter problems and not cause problems.
