  • January 3 – Raúl Aparicio(56), Cuban short story writer, diplomat, university professor, journalist and historian, dies (b. 1913).
  • January 16- Large demonstrations in La Paz , in support of the Bolivian president, Alfredo Ovando Candía .
  • January 19- The second million metric tons of sugar are produced in the ten million harvest.

February

  • February 1- Serious clashes in Colombia between supporters of candidate Gustavo Rojas Pinilla and pro-government supporters, as the country’s presidential election campaign approaches.
  • February 3 – Mohammed Ali, Cassius Clay , former world heavyweight champion, announces his final retirement from boxing .

May

  • May 4- At Kent State University (United States), the National Guard kills four students.
  • May 12- In the city of Camagüey, Cuban weightlifter Daniel Núñez achieves two world youth records in a tournament held.
  • May 12- Nelly Sachs , German poet, Nobel Prize winner in Literature in 1966, dies.
  • May 16- Gabriela Sabatini , Argentine tennis player, is born.
  • May 17- In central Cuba, the revolutionary government inaugurates the Lebrije dam .
  • May 20- Marco Antonio Yon Sosa (40), Guatemalan military leader and guerrilla leader, dies; murdered in cold blood after surrendering (b. 1929).

  • June 3- The Cuban Minister of Public Health arrives in Lima (the capital of Peru) at the head of a delegation that is coordinating the installation of an air bridge that would bring aid to that sister country.

  • June 4- In Havana, the MINSAP (through ministerial resolution No. 141) orders that the Sanitary Unit of Encrucijada (in the former province of Las Villas ) be named “ Abel Santamaría ”. “The most beloved, generous and intrepid of our youth, whose glorious resistance immortalizes him in history…” this is how Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro describes him in his self-defense after the assault on the Moncada barracks.
