Halloween is not celebrated as actively in Russia and the CIS countries as abroad. Including because it is quite time-consuming and resource-intensive, because you need to: prepare costumes, themed decorations, various food and drinks (preferably also in the style of the holiday).
If you are not into all these jokes with dressing up and making vampire snot gummies, then there is an alternative – spend the holidays with an interesting game. This is how the authors of these lines are spending this weekend. We have collected 10 of them.
Resident Evil Village
Denis Abramov
The latest Resident Evil builds on many of the successes of the seventh, but does not forget about the other installments of the franchise. “Seven” should be criticized for the monotony of locations, enemies and situations – Village solved these problems, and in a very elegant way. It spied the best from the previous games of the franchise.
It’s like Resident Evil 4: there are many different locations with riddles, traps and enemies. The leveling and economy have migrated from the same fourth part. The main character can improve weapons, install upgrades on them or craft cartridges. In general, nothing superfluous.
BioShock 2
Denis Abramov
In the second part of BioShock, the player will once again set out to explore the beauty of the underwater city of Rapture, but this time in the armor of a Big Daddy. Yes, the same monster that pursued the protagonist of the previous game. And this greatly enlivened the gameplay. Our character does not care about ordinary opponents at all – he destroys them with the help of a powerful arsenal of weapons and a hand drill the size of an adult.
True, there are also unusual enemies, among which are the Big Sisters. This is the second version of the protector of the little sisters, who travel through the destroyed Rapture and suck resources from its dead inhabitants. A duel with each of them is memorable for a long time.
Dying Light
Denis Abramov
In Dying Light, the player finds himself in an extremely unenviable position. A locked city, swarming with zombies and dangerous mutants, and an important task to complete! But the main character has a universal answer to this – hand-to-hand combat skills and parkour.
Moving from point A to point B is very addictive: the character briskly jumps across rooftops, climbs no worse than Altair, and the way he kicks from a jump is a sight to behold. Dying Light can be called a successful development of the ideas of Mirror’s Edge. You are given a dangerous open world in which you need to complete tasks and move along the plot, and there is nowhere to wait for help. It is even more interesting to see what will happen in the second part. If it ever comes out, of course.
Alien Isolation
Denis Abramov
The best Alien game surprisingly turned out to be neither an action game nor a shooter, but a real survival simulator on a space station and a true successor to the original Ridley Scott film.
The daughter of the famous Ellen Ripley, Amanda, finds herself in an extremely unpleasant situation. The entire complex is in a precarious state, there is practically no staff, no electricity either. But that’s not the worst thing. Somewhere in the dark tunnels and ventilation, an Alien is crawling – just one, but deadly. It can instantly kill Amanda, so the girl cannot go into open combat with it. You need to use your wits and various gadgets, and also not be stupid and know how to hide.
Bloodborne
Denis Abramov
I can say with complete confidence that Bloodborne is the best “soulslike” of all. Yes, it does not have a huge variety of builds, like in Dark Souls, it does not have fast gameplay, like in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, but it has another thing – it feels like a soul.
You can see how Hidetaka Miyazaki wrote the lore with trepidation, sat with the environment artists and worked out the combat mechanics with the team of game designers. Bloodborne is a very fast and fast-paced action game that encourages aggression. The player can quickly win back some health if he missed a monster’s blow, and parrying works with a timing shot from a pistol. Well, the game has very cool boss fights, this is also worth remembering. You will never forget the first battle with Father Gascoigne.
DOOM 3
Mikhail Shevkun
Gameplay-wise, the third DOOM has little in common with the rest of the series, but in many ways this makes it special. The hero is much weaker here, and at first the creators rely on atmosphere and horror. Enemies hide in the dark and like to run from behind, and the flashlight quickly runs out of energy (initially, the flashlight was a separate item). And visually, all this looks really scary. Halloween is a great opportunity to replay or get acquainted with the cult shooter for the first time.
Left 4 Dead
Mikhail Shevkun
Valve’s cooperative shooter is hardly a scary game, but it does a good job of keeping you on edge – especially at higher difficulty levels, when you’re running low on ammo and health, and there’s still a long way to the nearest shelter. In PvP, this feeling multiplies many times over. Gather your friends!
Until Dawn
Mikhail Shevkun
An interactive slasher movie where the player chooses what the characters will do – will they split up, as they do in all horror movies, or will they act a little smarter? In addition, the story of Until Dawn hides several great plot twists.
The game has collected all the cliches and features of the genre, managing to successfully mix and use them. An excellent Halloween horror for both one and a company.
FEAR 2
Mikhail Shevkun
The first FEAR is great, of course, but the sequel to the horror shooter has its advantages, too — first and foremost, the variety of locations. In the sequel, you’ll not only visit warehouses and offices, but also a hospital and school, and go out into the “fresh air.” All this accompanied by a little girl straight from “The Ring” — although in FEAR 2 she often comes in the form of an already grown-up madam.
Anabiosis: Sleep of Reason
Mikhail Shevkun
The main character gets on a frozen ship, which needs to be defrosted section by section — for this, Ukrainian developers from Action Forms even implemented their own “ice thawing” technology. It still looks extremely impressive. In terms of gameplay, “Anabiosis” most closely resembles Condemned — the main focus is on close combat, but firearms can also be used occasionally.
