Surface soils may yield good water provided they are protected from any risk of pollution from surface wash
ings. The well should be sunk as deep as possible into the water-bearing stratum. It should be lined with
bricks and cement, and this protection should be carried sufficiently high above the ground to prevent impurities
from entering and fouling the water in the well.
