What Is Cordite;Why It Is Very Important Gunpowder?

Cordite is widely used as a smokeless propellant. Cordite was produced by the United Kingdom from 1889, with the objective of replacing black powder. However, like black powder, cordite is classified as a “blasting explosive” because of its slow combustion, resulting in low  breakage.It is often called “smokeless powder”, although it is not really a powder but an explosive with the appearance of a yellowish to brown plastic.

Cordite has good propellant properties and is generally safe to handle. If ignited in the open it burns; it may be subjected to considerable shock without detonating, e.g. bullets fired through packages of C. fail to explode it. It is waterproof and remains unaltered for a considerable time, even when in contact with metallic envelopes. With suitable precautions it is safe for transport and storage for many years. It is customary for stored and to be tested for chemical stability at regular intervals and its use to be limited to a certain number of years in accordance with these tests, after which it is destroyed.
